Planting with Natives

Join us on Saturday, October 9th from 10 to 11 am for an in-person (outdoors) Planting with Natives horticulture class. Led by Steven Valdez, Nursery Production Associate, you will learn about how to prepare your site for planting. Steven will share experienced advice for watering and caring for new plants, as well as for plants that are well established in your garden. Steven will guide you to some tried and true native performers for most garden environments, including shade versus full sun selections. He will also share with you his favorite sources of information and some of his favorite tools and practices for successful gardening with natives.

With your new native planting knowledge, you will be ready for the launch of Grow Native Nursery the following weekend.

Fall is for planting! Here at California Botanic Garden, we are getting ready for the planting season! Fall, and into winter, is the perfect time to plant many California native plants. The cooler temperatures and the rainy season ahead, allow for these plants to become established before the dry conditions and harsh temperatures of a Southern California summer.

The benefits of planting with natives are vast! Aside from the wonderful aesthetic qualities and pops of vivid color natives bring to your garden, by planting species most suited to this mediterranean climate, you will conserve water and bring native birds and butterflies to your yard. Imagine the wonderful wildlife viewing you will be able to enjoy!

Sign up early! Class size is very limited. Please bring your mask or plan to observe social distancing.
